Book Group Meeting

Don't forget to join us on May 6th at 7 pm for our book group discussion! We are discussing The Sea Captain's Wife.

The next book group meeting is July 1st. (The first Tuesday in July) Should we move this date to the 8th? We have selected The Senator's Wife by Sue Miller as the read for the summer. Attendees will need to obtain their own copies for this discussion, as the book is too new to be available as a trade publication and affordable for the Friends to purchase multiple copies.

SPRING BOOK AND BAKE SALE

The Spring Book and Bake sale was Saturday April 12th. We had a great turn out and sold over $1300 worth of books, tapes, CD's and baked goods. Watch for information about our fall book and bake sale and the famous fall basket raffle.
A special thank you to all who volunteered to help on Saturday, especially our wonderful bakers. Thank you!

MAY BOOK GROUP CHOICE

The FOPL May book group choice is The Sea Captain's Wife: A true story of Love, Race & War in the Nineteenth Century by Martha Hodes. This non-fiction book was a Lincoln Prize Finalist and named one of the best books of 2006 by Library Journal.
From 500 family letters, award-winning historian Martha Hodes recreates the extraordinary life of an ordinary nineteenth-century woman. Eunice Connolly, born white and poor in New England, watched her brothers and husband fight on opposite sides of the Civil War, then fell in love with a well-to-do black sea captain from the West Indies. This story of misfortune and defiance takes up grand themes of American history: opportunity and racism, slavery and war, equality and freedom.
Please join us on May 6th at 7 PM at the Pembroke Public Library to discuss this true story.
